Kitchen Layout Changes: When It's Worth Moving Plumbing and Electrical

Keeping your sink, dishwasher, and range roughly where they already are is the cheapest way to renovate a kitchen. But sometimes the existing layout is genuinely working against you — here's how to tell if a layout change is worth it.

When It's Usually Worth It

• The sink faces a wall instead of the room. Moving it to an island or a window wall is one of the highest-satisfaction changes we do, especially in older Kitchener homes built with the kitchen as a closed-off room.
• You're removing a wall to open to the living/dining area. If you're already doing structural work, it's the right time to also relocate anything that's in an awkward spot — the incremental cost is lower once walls are already open.
• The fridge, sink, and range form an inefficient or unsafe triangle — for example, a range directly beside the fridge, or a walkway that cuts straight through the main prep zone.

When It's Usually Not Worth It

If the layout works and you're mainly after updated cabinets, counters, and finishes, moving plumbing and electrical adds cost without changing how the kitchen actually functions day to day. This is the majority of the renovations we do — most Kitchener kitchens have a workable footprint and just need new cabinetry, counters, and lighting.

What Moving Things Actually Involves

Relocating a sink means rerouting supply and drain lines, which is straightforward above a basement or crawlspace and more involved over a slab-on-grade. Moving a range from gas to a new location means a new gas line run, permitted and inspected. Electrical for a relocated dishwasher or under-cabinet lighting is comparatively minor. We always price layout changes as a separate line item so you can see exactly what the move is costing versus the rest of the renovation.
