Cabinet Refacing vs. Full Replacement: What's Right for Your Kitchener Kitchen?

Cabinets are usually the single biggest line item in a kitchen renovation, so it's worth understanding exactly what refacing buys you versus a full replacement.

Cabinet Refacing

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes (the structural frames, which are usually still perfectly sound even in an older home) and replaces the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, with new veneer applied to any exposed box surfaces. It's significantly less expensive than full replacement and creates far less disruption — no need to touch plumbing, electrical, or flooring around the cabinets.

Refacing makes sense when: your current layout works, the boxes are square and in good condition, and you mainly want an updated look.

Full Replacement

Full replacement means new boxes throughout — the only real option if you're changing the layout, need different cabinet depths or heights, want to add an island, or the existing boxes have water damage, particle board swelling, or aren't square anymore (common in homes with foundation settling).

Replacement makes sense when: you're doing a layout change anyway, the boxes are compromised, or you want features refacing can't provide — like different storage configurations, a larger island, or floor-to-ceiling upper cabinets.

The Middle Ground

A common approach in Kitchener kitchens: replace lower cabinets (which take the most wear and are where layout changes usually happen) while refacing uppers that are still in good shape. This is worth discussing at the quote stage — it's not always obvious from looking at the kitchen which cabinets are actually worth keeping until they're opened up.

Either way, cabinets should be the first thing quoted in detail, since the decision affects the sequencing of everything else — countertop templating, backsplash, and lighting all depend on final cabinet dimensions.
